Sarah Price's woodland glade oasis at Maggie's Centre
Designer Sarah Price's garden for Maggie's Centre Southhampton creates a peaceful oasis on the former site of the hospital's car park
A former car park at Southampton General Hospital has been transformed by Amanda Levete’s ceramic-walled pavilion and naturalistic planting into a woodland glade oasis for cancer charity Maggie’s.
Designed by Sarah Price, working with architects AL_A, the garden for Maggie’s Centre Southampton draws on the ecology of the New Forest with birch trees underplanted with woodland plants that are reflected in mottled, stainless steel cladding.
Sarah co-designed the 2012 Gardens at London’s Olympic Park and was a planting consultant for LDA Design on the post-Games legacy design.
Situated close to the oncology wards at Southampton General Hospital, Maggie’s Southampton is a warm and welcoming place, where people with cancer can meet with professional staff to gain the support that individuals and families need.
Shona Robison, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport comments "I have seen first-hand the significant impact Maggie’s makes to individuals experiencing a cancer diagnosis. Their beautifully designed centres have an instantly calming effect and the staff are on hand to offer a full range of support."
The centre itself comprises four zones, each of which opens on to its own private garden through full-height sliding doors that disappear into the walls. Discover more about Sarah's work at sarahpricelandscapes.com
